Of Her Own Kind

After working in luxury fashion for many years, Kathryn Alex wanted to combine the craft of thoughtfully made clothing with a slow fashion, sustainable design philosophy.
“Much of womenswear is based on releasing large, quickly made, trend-based collections — I wanted to create a line for women that obsesses on all the little craft details and fabrics the way that many menswear brands do, but through a distinctly feminine lens,” she said.
Armed with plenty of ideas for dreamy designs and a desire to champion local production, Kathryn created Of Her Own Kind.
Located in Brooklyn, the clothing studio creates timeless designs from organic and natural fiber fabrics that outlast conventional fashion cycles and are all produced locally in NYC at women-owned ateliers. The flowing frocks are inspired by Kathryn’s own nostalgic memories of her New England childhood, as well as the natural majesty of upstate New York.
“Each piece starts with a feeling or memory I want to evoke, a story I want to tell. For me clothing is a visual language that helps us express our own unique story to the world,” she explained. “I am very much inspired by the wild natural beauty of upstate New York, classic literature, photography, and the memory behind family heirlooms.”
The line’s new spring summer collection launches in the coming weeks. All other available designs can be found here.
