Dina DiCenso wanted to start a business that would also allow her to do more for the community and animal welfare. So she created a tattoo studio that incorporated mindfulness into its practices. 

Located in Williamsburg, Gristle Tattoo specializes in vegan ink and procedures. It also functions as an art gallery that hosts events ranging from animal adoptions to fundraisers. 

While many products in other shops contain animal based glycerin or lanolin, Gristle’s stencil paper, soaps, ointment, razors and ink contain all vegan materials. And the products don’t come at the expense of quality, with many full-time and resident artists specializing in different styles. 

Gristle is currently hosting their annual cat-themed art show, Our Cult of Meow curated by Zoë Wiliams, the portions of which will be donated to a local cat rescue.

“We also hold a monthly tattoo gift certificate raffle fundraiser for different charities each month,” DiCenso explained. “Earlier this month we participated in P.INK (Personal Ink's) breast cancer event where tattooers from all over volunteered their time to mastectomy patients.”
